Who helped me craft visual digital literacy?
My Mother
My mom was the reason that my visual literacy ever began. She worked with the physically handicapped and she had many nonverbal clients. She brought the sign language she used with them home, and from there I knew how to say "Thank you" and "Please" in sign language. This was the beginning of my realization that images and visual representation could replace written speech. She unknowingly began my experience with using Visual representation as a form of communication, which began my journey of learning more about these elements.

Professor Mcdonnell was the first communications professor that I had at Grand View. In her course she helped us explain how communication works and how media communication can be done in more visual ways. Most importantly, she helped me dive into thoroughly understanding the weight behind a photograph. She had us construct a class presentation on a touchy topic within the media and my partner and I chose the exploitation of females in media. This project and her class allowed me to look further into how images are used within the media. This skill helped me immensely, when I embarked on my journey to editing and writing for university's publication, where my images would be tested similarly.
